Coloured capsules in an appropriate dosage for patients with chronic adrenal disease’. This is the result of a collaboration between healthcare providers, pharmacists, the Association of Supplying Preparation Pharmacies and the BijnierNET Foundation.

"BijnierNET was founded in 2014 by the Dutch Adrenal Association NVACP, the Dutch Adrenal Fund and the endocrinology specialists of the UMCs and the top STZ hospitals, with the aim of allowing patients, healthcare providers and informal caregivers to meet each other, exchange experiences and maintain and raise the knowledge about the care for adrenal patients at a high level. That is the driving force in this collaboration, we support each other!", says Johan Beun.

BijnierNET brought all parties together
"For many adrenal patients, it was a daily challenge to take the right medication and because the low dosage was not always available, healthcare providers and pharmacists did not know how to promote therapy compliance in their patient(s). After all, breaking tablets did occur, but was/is not advisable according to research by the KNMP", according to Johan Beun. When a registered medicine does not meet the requirements or is not available, a preparation can offer a solution. BijnierNET brought all parties together. "Patients, healthcare providers and pharmacists indicated wishes such as dosage, size, shape and colour of the medication. Fagron and the various compounding pharmacies provided an explanation of the possibilities and impossibilities of medicines."

Listening to wishes and needs
"Listening to wishes and needs on the one hand and involvement in the development of innovations on the other hand is of great importance to be able to provide the best customized care. Together with BijnierNET, Fagron and compounding pharmacies such as pharmacy De Ad hocbereider and Pharmaline, a color coding for capsules has been agreed.

The use of capsules ensures better masking of the taste, which is necessary for some people who otherwise experience every intake as torture. The uniform color coding contributes to medication safety and better therapy compliance for patients who are dependent on this hormone supplement and have to swallow several capsules with different dosages per day. The capsules vary in dosage, color and size. The intention is that the color coding for these Hydrocortisone capsules will be implemented nationwide by all compounding pharmacies.

Patients, big and small, benefit from this
"This demand-driven, broad national approach in a safe setting meant that everyone could play their part in their own context. We helped each other on the road to improvements. Patients, big and small, are now reaping the benefits. Healthcare providers and pharmacists now also have an additional solution for people who use different amounts of Hydrocortisone per day and of course also for the 'bad swallowers'. It is simply great to be able to work together in this way to improve components of the care as a whole, close to the patient", says Johan Beun.
