Progesterone
Progesterone
What is progestrone?Â
It is an important sex hormone, mainly produced by the corpus luteum (the yellow body) in the ovaries after ovulation. During pregnancy, progesterone is largely produced by the placenta. This hormone plays a crucial role in the female reproductive cycle, supporting fertility and contributing to overall hormonal balance.Progesterone and menopause
Progesterone around the time of the menopause
During this phase, which precedes menopause, progesterone production often begins to decline earlier than estrogen production. This can lead to various symptoms, such as:
- Irregular menstrual cycles, sometimes with heavier or longer periods
- Sleep problems and reduced stress resistance
- Mood swings, irritability and feelings of depression.
- Bloating and fluid retention, which can lead to weight gain around the abdomen.
- Headaches or migraines, especially around menstruation.
- Sensitive or painful breasts
- Fatigue and 'brain fog'
Progesterone in postmenopause
The phase after menopause is called postmenopause. It officially begins one year after the last menstrual period and lasts for the rest of a woman's life. During this time, the ovaries produce virtually no estrogen or progesterone, resulting in low hormone levels. This can result in:
Accelerated bone loss and an increased risk of osteoporosis
Vaginal dryness and pain during intercourse
An increased risk of cardiovascular disease
Changes in skin and hair
Poor sleep and increased sensitivity to stress.
Mood swings and irritability.
An increased risk of endometrial problems with oestrogen therapy without sufficient progesterone.
Preparation options at Infinity Pharma
Â
Infinity Pharma offers the option of personalizing progesterone in various forms to meet each woman's individual needs. This is particularly useful for women who do not respond well to standard dosages or who suffer from side effects.Â
There are two main forms of administration:Â
Progesterone in capsules
This uses an innovative capsule excipient called Dilucap®, which ensures the active ingredient is released and absorbed more effectively.Â
Progesterone in Pentravan®Â
Fagron Pentravan® is an advanced transdermal base cream that optimizes progesterone absorption through the skin. Thanks to its consistent release profile, it maintains stable hormone levels, providing an effective alternative to oral administration, particularly for women who are sensitive to certain excipients in conventional medications.

Prescription and medical supervision required.
As progesterone affects hormonal balance, it is only available on prescription and must be used under strict medical supervision. Your doctor will draw up a personalized treatment plan and assess any potential risk factors. The medication will only be dispensed after a thorough check of your medication and an initial personal consultation at the pharmacy. This will ensure that you can start your treatment safely and with all the necessary information.Â

Progesterone fulfils various functions in the body. The hormone:- Prepares the uterine lining (endometrium) for the implantation of a fertilized egg, thereby helping to regulate the menstrual cycle.
- Balances the effect of estrogen on the uterus, preventing excessive thickening of the lining and reducing the risk of hyperplasia or uterine cancer.
- It has a calming effect by stimulating GABA receptors, which can contribute to better sleep and reduced anxiety. It also plays a role in premenstrual mood swings (PMS).
- It works together with estrogen to prevent bone loss and influences insulin sensitivity and fat storage.
- It contributes to healthy skin and hair by promoting skin elasticity and collagen production, as well as regulating sebum production.

HRT with bio-identical progesterone
HRT can help to compensate for the decrease in progesterone and estrogen, thereby reducing menopausal symptoms. Bioidentical progesterone has the same molecular structure as the body's own hormone and is generally better tolerated than synthetic progestogens. The benefits of bioidentical progesterone in HRT include::Â- Protects the uterine lining during estrogen therapy.
- Improved sleep and reduced anxiety when taken orally.
- Possible positive effects on cardiovascular health.
Bio-identical progesterone versus progestinÂ
Bioidentical progesterone is molecularly identical to the natural hormone. Micronisation, a technique that processes progesterone into very small particles, improves its absorption in the body. Products such as Utrogestan and custom preparations in Pentravan® cream or capsules contain micronized progesterone.Synthetic progestogens, on the other hand, have a similar effect but differ in structure and may therefore have different side effects and risks.
