Risk factors withdrawal symptoms:

Patients who stop taking an SSRI or SNRI abruptly or within a few days are at risk of experiencing withdrawal symptoms. This is known as antidepressant discontinuation syndrome (ADS)1

  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Sensation of electric shocks
  • Psychological complaints such as anxiety, depression and irritability
If severe withdrawal symptoms occur, it may be advisable to increase the dose again. This will be the lowest dose at which you did not experience severe withdrawal symptoms. This also helps to distinguish withdrawal symptoms from a relapse.2
